Listen To This WPGC Aircheck

(Special thanks to Walt Bailey for the audio above)

This countdown aired on January 1st, 1973. Noticeably more energetic than on the previous year's countdown, the station faced a potential threat to it's crown with the advent of NBC's O&O WRC going head to head with the station.

WPGC's primary positioner at the time was 'Where The Rock Rolls On', no doubt in response to WRC's 'The Rock Of The Capital' (but certainly not of Chicago!). As a blocking move however, WPGC attempted to use every conceivable positioner used in the industry at the time so WRC couldn't. Throughout the countdown, the station is alternately called 'WPGC #1', 'All Hit Music', 'Non-Stop Stereo Rock' & 'Musicradio'.

'Columbus' had by this time moved from nights to middays, a shift he would hold until long time Morning Man, Harv Moore left the station in 1975 when Columbus moved to mornings. He would later go on to WLS and freelance voice over work on national spots.

Also heard on this countdown was 'Bob Raleigh', a house name used on the station by six different guys! This one was Bill Miller who joined the station from KOIL in Omaha for nights in 1966 but by this time had become News Director for the station, yet still managed to pull one weekend air shift.

Other things to listen for:

- A news report of the plane crash that claimed the life of Roberto Clemente.

- A 'Voices of Rock' contest in which listeners had to identify a mystery rock star's voice. No one won throughout the entire countdown!

- General Manager, Bob Howard's voice as 'Mr. Soundoff' on the listener 'Soundoffs' in this special show.
