On the Front Cover:
Caption reads: Thomas Aloysius Allen wants to Make It With You 10 a.m.-3p.m.
Tom Allen arrived at WPGC for nights in 1971 when Davy Jones left for mornings at WMAL-FM. Later when Bob Raleigh Jr. (Dewitt Robert Raleigh) left middays, Tom moved to 10a-3p before leaving WPGC in 1972 for sister station, WMEX in Boston where he was PD and did Noon-3p.
See him there in 1972.

#1 on WPGC Today in 1971
The man who would 'risk his neck for his brother man' was the subject of a film and hit record to boot. 'John Shaft' may have been portrayed by Richard Roundtree, but his persona was brought to life musically by Soul legend, Isaac Hayes, long a songwriting force at Stax Records with numerous successes for artists including Sam & Dave, Carla Thomas and others. The pinnacle of his powers came in scoring the film in which he had a cameo as the bartender in the 'No Name Bar'. After laying down the rhythm track for the title song, he went on to compose the rest of the soundtrack before returning to the theme. Read more on the track.
With an intro over a minute & a half long, it was clear this was no ordinary single. Its lush orchestration fused with elements of funk laid down a groove as memorable as the lyrics, not the least of which was his characterization of 'Shaft' as a 'bad mutha' ('mutha' was edited out on the single, chopped down from 4:34 to 3:15) to which background singer, Telma Hopkins of Tony Orlando & Dawn replied, 'Shut your mouth' (Joyce Wilson of Dawn also sang on the tune). His inclusion of, 'Damn right' marked the first time such language appeared on a #1 tune on Billboard's Hot 100 where it spent two consecutive weeks at the top and spent its first of two consecutive weeks at #1 on the WPGC Good Guys All Hit Music survey on 10/30/71. See enlargement.
The piece won Hayes an Academy Award for 'Best Original Song', making him the first African American to win any award in a non-acting category as well as the first recipient to have both written and performed the winning song. Isaac also ventured into acting, at one point having a semi-recurring role on 'The Rockford Files' and later in various films. Yet he is probably best remembered on screen as the voice of 'Chef' on 'South Park', a role he left in protest due to how Scientology, which he practiced, was portrayed on the show. Sadly, he passed away of a stroke on 08/10/08, ten days before his 66th birthday. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. In 2010, a section of Interstate 40 in Tennessee was named the 'Isaac Hayes Memorial Highway'. |
