Listen To This WPGC Aircheck

JJ McKay joined the station in 1981. He moved to afternoons when Dude Walker went to mornings with Dave Foxx as 'Dude & Dave'. JJ left the following year when he was spotted at a Redskins game after having called in sick that day! He later when on to do mornings at Q107.

This aircheck comes from the final summer before the apocalyptic change in format to Adult Contemporary later in 1982. Tickets being given away at the time were to the Washington area premier of 'The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas' and an invitation to WPGC's after-movie party at Annie Oakley's in Georgetown.

But the big summer blockbuster at the theaters was 'E.T., The Extraterrestrial'. Topically tying in with the film's huge success, contesting consisted of the 'E.T. Phone Home' promotion in which listeners had to guess the phone number to send him home so they could win airfare on Eastern Airlines to go home too along with $500 in cash. The voice of E.T. was done by Howard Hoffman (of NINE! fame) who happened to be the morning man at WPGC's sister station, KOPA in Phoenix. The winning number turned out to be 836-0211. One has to wonder if the owner of that number was besieged with callers wanting to speak with E.T.!

All commercials on this tape were agency produced other than the News 7 spot promoting the top stories coming up on the news that night.

A variety of station positioning statements were in use. And 'variety' was one of their themes, such as, 'With A Better Variety Of Washington's Favorite Songs' (or, 'Oldies'), 'Famous For Washington's Best Music' and the seasonal, 'Washington's Summertime Station'.

Although not heard on this tape, jingles were from a TM package in 1981. The WPGC 'Whisper Drop' came from a JAM package in 1980 and were used to quickly identify the station without interrupting the flow of the music.

Special thanks to Dude Walker for providing this tape.
