#1 on WPGC Today in 1974
By late 1974, the beat-driven, dance music that would come to be known as 'Disco' was making its way onto mainstream radio playlists. Heretofore unheard of acts would be ushered in, in a wave culminating by the end of the decade. One of these was the Brooklyn Transit Express, quickly shortened to 'B.T. Express'. Their debut single, 'Do It (Till You're Satisfied)' took the express route on the Pop national charts where it peaked at #2 for 2 weeks, hit #1 on the R&B chart for a week and spent its second of two consecutive weeks at #1 on the WPGC All Hit Music survey on 11/16/74. See enlargement.
The song was written by Billy Nichols, a saxophonist and guitarist who had toured with Marvin Gaye and the Spinners and who had written songs for Millie Jackson. Having just purchased a drum machine, Nichols came up with the groove first and initially intended to use the title of the song as the complete lyric, chanted over the track. When the Express agreed to record it however, they wanted it fleshed out to its now familiar form. Nichols and the group were fond of one another, leading to an offer by the band for him to join them. But tired of traveling on the road, he turned them down, choosing instead to remain at home to focus in his songwriting and producing.
The recording was completed in just two takes, with the 5:52 album version trimmed down to a more radio manageable 3:09 single edit and was featured on their first album released after the single. That same disc also included an instrumental which the band composed themselves, the aptly named, 'Express' which was another Top 5 hit on the Pop charts and went #1 R&B. Though the group continued to release material through the late '70's, the demise of their record label, Scepter led to a move to Columbia. But on a label with infinitely more acts, the group received less attention than they had previously, leaving them less than 'satisfied'. |
