Bill Miller was the 5th of the 6 'Bob Raleighs' at WPGC over the years. Located on the right, not left as indicated in the caption, he arrived from KOIL in Omaha in December, 1965 for nights. By 1968, he was promoted to Morning News Guy with Harv Moore and Production Director and stayed with the station in those capacities through 'The Great Strike (That Struck Out)' in May of 1977.

He later did mornings (as the jock, not doing news) at WPOC in
Bal-ti-more. The 7-Eleven Slurpee contest was little more than a Sales promotion.

Bill Miller passed away due to complications of pneumonia at age 78 on 01/29/18. Read his obit in the Frederick News Post.

#1 on WPGC Today in 1973
Grand Funk Railroad had had several mid-charters in the early '70s, most notably with, 'Closer To Home' in 1970. Wanting a more polished sound, the band, by now known as 'Zzz' hired Todd Rundgren as Producer. It was a move that set the stage for their greatest period of success; both their #1 singles and their two most popular albums were under the direction of Todd. The first evidence of this was the title track from their LP, 'We're An American Band' which hit #1 nationally while the parent album peaked at #2. The single also hit #1 on the WPGC All Hit Music survey on 09/22/73. See enlargement.

The tune was written by the group's drummer, Don Brewer who also did lead vocal, a role customarily filled by Mark Farner. Much of the lyrics were autobiographical in nature, including the song's title. In early 1973, the band was touring with the UK's, Humble Pie (at one point, Grand Funk had attempted to recruit Peter Frampton from that band to join the group but he was unavailable having signed his solo deal by then with A&M). Following a show one night, members of each group got into an argument as to the relative merits of Rock & Roll from their respective lands. After rolling off names like Elvis, Little Richard and others, Brewer proclaimed, 'We're an American band!'. The next morning, he wrote the rest of the song.

The track also tells of their trek through Little Rock and their encounter with four groupies who snuck into their hotel in Omaha, among them, 'Sweet, sweet Connie', a reference to professional groupie, Connie Hamzy. When the single was released by Capitol, it was issued on transparent yellow vinyl, as close to gold as was possible. It seemed fitting then that the record would indeed go Gold, selling over a million copies. Today, various members of the band continue to tour, doing 40 shows per year, thoSee the song in colored vinyl.
