of Jim

Note:
'Brother Louie' by Stories below would go on to be the
#1 song of the year on the WPGC
Top 100 of 1973.

#1 on WPGC Today in 1973
The question as to who the Rolling Stones wrote, 'Angie' about has no absolute answer and may, like the identity of the mysterious person in Carly Simon's, 'You're So Vain' (released the same year in 1973 and which ironically featured Mick Jagger on background vocals) be a composite of numerous individuals who served as inspiration for the song. The most likely of these would appear to be Angela Bowie, first wife of David, long time friend of Mick. It was she that help conceptualize the stage costumes for the 'Ziggy Stardust' stage shows and appeared in the concert film of the same name. Yet Mick has denied that the tune was written about her.
Though Mick and Keith Richards were credited with co-writing Stones' songs together, like Lennon & McCartney, there were instances in which a given title was predominantly penned by one or the other. That was the case with, 'Angie', written primarily by Keith who was speculated to have chosen the title based on his newborn daughter, Dandelion Angela. Yet the song was written before she was born, even before the gender of the child was known. In any event, the song was the first ballad by the Stones to hit #1 nationally in the US and spent its first of two consecutive weeks at #1 on the WPGC All Hit Music survey on 09/29/73. See enlargement.
The track was the first released from their, 'Goat's Head Soup' LP that year. Atlantic Records, distributor of the Stones own vanity label were not pleased with the selection of the song as the lead off single, wanting something more raucous, ala, 'Brown Sugar'. Nevertheless, the album would go on to triple Platinum in the US. In 2005, the tune would enjoy a resurgence when Germany's Angela Merkel used it without permission. The band subsequently said they would not have granted it if asked. Two music videos were shot to promote the song. See Mick singing live to the pre-recorded backing track (note the conspicuous absence of a piano!) |
