Don Bishop

As Program Director of WPGC sister station, KAYK / Provo, Don Bishop came to WPGC initially during the Great Strike That Struck Out in May of 1977. He returned to Provo after WPGC was fully staffed again. Having previously worked at KNUS / Dallas and KIQQ in Los Angeles, he wanted to get back into the big time and came back to Washington to work at Q107 in 1979. When his contract was not renewed a year later, he crossed the street to return to (wait for it...), WPGC! But ABC got an injuntion enforcing his no-compete, resulting in him accepting a gig in Chicago at Bonneville's Soft AC there.

He later resurfaced in Southern California and worked as both a Program Director and on the air for many years at the Unistar / Westwood One / Dial-Global Radio Networks. Sadly, Don passed away on September 10, 2017. Read his obituary, see photos of his family and tributes from his many colleagues.

Don is now at that great transmitter in the sky. His is the eternal light that shines brightly at the top of that very tall tower..... May he RIP.

Don O'Dea writes

I had the pleasure of working with Don at two stations in Provo, Utah: KFMY and KEYY. Although Don was from a relatively small town in Utah, and had the gift of voice and the chops for the big-time. It didn't take long for him to make it to major markets such as Dallas, Chicago, Washington, DC, and LA. He had one of the cleanest, purest on-air deliveries I ever heard.

Don was not only a superb talent, but also a devoted husband, father, churchman and an outstanding citizen. He was a good man who loved his family and was a sterling example of fatherhood, citizenship and patriotism. That was somewhat of a rarity in his chosen profession. He was a tremendous credit to radio and to the name Bishop. My main regret is that I had not been in touch with Don for several years. Surely, he is enjoying a wonderful reunion with his wife now.
