Listen To This WPGC Aircheck

This aircheck sounds as if it may have been recorded in a moving car and fades in and out several times but is otherwise very listenable.

Columbus joined WPGC on August 16, 1971 for nights from a small station in Coatesville, PA. when Tom Allen moved to middays as Bob Raleigh Jr. (DeWitt Robert Raleigh) left the station. Columbus moved to middays in 1972 when Tom Allen left to program WMEX in Boston. In early 1975, Harv Moore left for WYSL in Buffalo and he inherited the morning show where he remained until late in the year when he left for the Production Director gig at WLS in Chicago.

Heard here just a few months after Harv's departure, the only thing larger than the shoes he left to fill was Columbus' massive pipes which would soon bring him national acclaim on the Heinz ketsup commercial featuring Carly Simon's 'Anticipation'. It was he who did the 'slow good' voice over.

Columbus' early foray into voice overs is heard on a spot for the Washington Area Pontiac Dealers at the beginning of this tape. The female voice talent on it with him is unknown.

On this particular early Summer morning, long-time News Guy & Production Director, Bob Raleigh (Bill Miller) is nowhere to be heard. Columbus resorts to relaying a story on the indictment of Maryland Governor, Marvin Mandel courtesy of the Washington Post.

Very much present however is Linda Kelly in the Gold Money Car who calls in via radiotelephone in her quest to give away a $100 bill to a motorist displaying a WPGC bumpersticker.

A comedy bit featuring a high school student mooning the audience at a variety show concludes this tape.

Contesting at the time included giving away Paul McCartney's 'Venus & Mars' album. The station's primary on-air positioner was the venerable, 'Musicradio'. Jingles are from PAMS' 'LS Auditions, ironic in that before the year's end, Columbus himself would be heard on the Enormous 89!
