#1 on WPGC Today in 1978

For a 'new' artist in the late '70's, it was tough to get a break if not associated with Disco in some way. Having an established team like Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn produce your record didn't hurt though. That is just what happened to Exile. Chapman came to the US from the UK in 1977 looking for an experienced band who wrote their own music. He found what he was searching for with the group once known as 'The Exiles', a name derived from Cuban refugees fleeing Castro's dictatorship. The resulting single, 'Kiss You All Over' hit #1 nationally for 4 weeks and spent its first of three consecutive weeks at #1 on the WPGC Musicradio survey on 09/16/78. See enlargement.

The nucleus of the band formed in Richmond, Kentucky in 1963. Within a couple of years they joined Dick Clark's Caravan of Stars when it rolled through Kentucky. That led to them touring with the Caravan nationally through 1966, opening the show and singing backgrounds for acts like Freddy 'Boom Boom' Cannon and Bobby Rydell. By 1973 they shortened their name to Exile and recorded their first album to little fanfare. Five long years later they hit the big time with 'Kiss'. Neither of their follow ups were hits though. As far as Pop fans were concerned, they were a one-hit wonder. Read more on the band.

Lead vocalist, Jimmy Stokley was ousted from the band in 1979. His declining health led to his passing at age 41 in 1985. His replacement helped forge the path to a long string of Country hits in the '80's. The trend started when other acts began recording their songs. Two of them became hits for Alabama, with, 'The Closer You Get' and 'Take Me Down'. Between 1983 and 1991, Exile would go on to have 21 Country hits, amassing 10 #1 songs. With numerous other personnel changes taking place subsequently, the group broke up in the '90's with various members of the 35 total reuniting later and who still tour to this day.
