on Columbus & Kevin
James.
Columbus discovered DC on 08/16/71, originally doing nights at WPGC, coming from WCOJ in Coatesville, PA. A local graduate of Suitland High, he moved to middays in 1972 when Tom Allen left to program sister station, WMEX in Boston and wound up in mornings early in 1975 when Harv Moore left for WYSL in Buffalo. Late that year, Columbus left for the Production Director gig at WLS.
Kevin
James had worked at WEAM and at stations in Annapolis & WLPL in Baltimore before arriving for overnights at WPGC. He later had stints at WKYS as well as various other gigs in Houston, Los Angeles and San Diego, in addition to his nationally syndicated, 'Slow Jams' show. |

#1 on WPGC Today in 1975
Harry Wayne Casey formed the Sunshine Band in 1973 while working at a record store and part time employee at TK Records in Florida. It was while working at TK that he met Richard Finch, an engineer for the label. The two began a songwriting collaboration that would ultimately yield six #1 hits. The first of these however was not for the band itself, but rather for George McCrae who hit #1 with, 'Rock Your Baby' in 1974. One year later, the band broke big, with 'Get Down Tonight' which hit #1 nationally and spent its first of two consecutive weeks at #1 on the WPGC Music Radio survey on 08/23/75.
Hot on the heels of that success came another #1 with, 'That's The Way I Like It'. More #1's followed with, '(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty', 'I'm Your Boogie Man' and 'Keep It Comin' Love' just missing the top spot, peaking at #2. Their final #1 finished the decade in the Fall of 1979 with, 'Please Don't Go', a song which became the first #1 of the '80's (not counting Rupert Holmes', 'Escape (The Pina Colada Song)' which crossed over from 1979-1980). Casey's first major success outside of the band was the duet with Teri DeSario, 'Yes I'm Ready' in 1980 which fared even better than the original by Barbara Mason in 1965. Read more on the Sunshine Band.
When TK Records went bankrupt after the decline in Disco, the band signed with Epic. A 1982 single, 'Give It Up' was a hit in the UK but not released by the label as a single in the US. Two years later, Casey released it himself as a solo effort where it went on to crack the Top 40. 1982 was also the year Casey was involved in a head-on car collision which left him partially paralyzed for 6 months. More problems faced him with a serious drug dependency throughout the '80's that effectively ended his performing career until going through rehab and resuming touring in the '90's. In 2012 the band was featured in a parody TV spot by an insurance company who wanted them to change their name to 'KC & the SunLife Band', an offer they turn down in disdain. And in 2016, the group appeared on Billboard's Dance Club Play chart with, 'I'm Feelin' You', a collaboration with Bimbo Jones. |
