On the Front Cover:

Caption reads: Columbus, Mornings at 10 on WPGC.

Columbus, who had previously covered 7p - midnight when he arrived at WPGC in August, 1971 from WCOJ in Coatesville, PA inherited middays in 1972 when Tom Allen left to Program sister station, WMEX in Boston.

He later moved to mornings in early 1975 when Harv Moore left for WYSL to join 'Mr. Sound Off', former WPGC GM, Bob Howard in Buffalo. By the end of 1975, Columbus left for the Production Director gig at WLS.

#1 on WPGC Today in 1974

Few songs of the '70's have been as maligned as Paul Anka's, '(You're) Having My Baby', though 'Feelings' and 'You Light Up My Life' come close. Poor Paul hadn't had a #1 hit in 15 years since, 'Lonely Boy' in 1959. Then his big comeback created a firestorm he couldn't put out. Aside from the overly sentimental lyrics, the wording of 'my' instead of 'our' proved too much for many. The Women's Movement of the early '70's had grown dramatically by the time of the song's release. It was the wrong song at the wrong time. Nevertheless, it hit #1 on Billboard's Hot 100 and also hit #1 on the WPGC All Hit Music survey today in 1974. See enlargement.

Reaction was swift as the National Organization of Women gave Anka their 'Keep Her In Her Place' award on Women's Equality Day that year while 'Ms.' magazine bestowed their 'Male Chauvinistic Pig of the Year' award on him. For his part, Anka contended the tune was a love song written for his wife and was not intended to alienate anyone. Claiming he could have just as easily used the word, 'our' but 'my' sounded better, his pleas for sympathy fell on deaf ears. If all that were not enough, the lyrics were also criticized for its stand on abortion, coming not many years after Roe v. Wade. For Paul, it was a no-win situation. Read more on the song.

The recording was the first time Anka had been paired up with a previously unknown session singer, also from Canada, Odia Coates whom Paul had met while on tour. At his Producer's suggestion, the song became a duet, the first of numerous times the pair would join musical forces. Riding on the coat tail (if not the 'Coates-tail') of the song's fame, an answer record, 'I'm Having Your Baby' by Sunday Sharpe (on United Artists Records, the same label Anka was on) hit #11 on Billboard's Hot Country singles chart not long after the original came out (Hoping for lightning to strike twice, she would record a cover of Paul's, 'Put Your Head On My Shoulder' the following year which stiffed at #48). Even more bizarre was the group, 'The Coolies' 1986 tongue in cheek cover of the tune in which it is revealed that she is not the only woman in town having his baby and so HE must leave town! Hear the Country cover. Read more on the cover version.
