There were three different 'Redheads' on Harv Moore's show. Joanie Fierstein was the third and best remembered. French bread will never be the same! Today, she is retired at NASA in Greenbelt. |

#1 on WPGC Today in 1973
When the Beatles split officially in 1970, it would have hardly seemed likely that of all four individual members, Ringo Starr would for a time enjoy the most success on the charts. Despite two of the most prolific songwriters in recorded music history with John & Paul, and the by then full blossomed talents of George in force, it was Ringo who found the most success. The fact he had assistance from his former band members at various points didn't hurt, epitomized by his, 'Ringo' LP in 1973, the only time all four of the Beatles appeared on a single album (though not all four at once) since the breakup.
The debut single from that LP, 'Photograph' was perhaps the most obvious example of those partnerships as Ringo and George co-wrote the tune, the only time in which they were formally identified that way, though the pairing of the two was common. They began writing the track in 1971 and did a basic recording of it during the sessions for Harrison's, 'Living in the Material World' album in 1973. Later that year, Producer, Richard Perry re-recorded the tune in LA. Adding to the track's grandiose-ness was Jack Nitzsche, Phil Spector's musical arranger for much of the '60's who contributed the strings and choral arrangements. The song went #1 nationally, selling over a million units and hit #1 on the WPGC All Hit Music survey on 11/17/73. See enlargement.
The release of the album as well as the song itself coincided with a low point in Ringo's life, as his marriage with Maureen was dissolving after her affair with Harrison. Included in the artwork in the booklet with the disc was a lithograph by Klaus Voormann of Ringo looking dejectedly at a framed 'photograph' of a woman. He would of course later go on to marry Barbara Bach whom he met while filming, 'Caveman'. Though he and Harrison never wrote together again, they were able to maintain their friendship. That bond was poignantly apparent in 2002 when Ringo performed 'Photograph' in his memory at the 'Concert for George' at the Royal Albert Hall in London on the one year anniversary of Harrison's passing. |
