Listen To This WPGC Aircheck

JJ McKay joined the station in 1981. He moved to afternoons when Dude Walker went to mornings with Dave Foxx as 'Dude & Dave'. JJ left the following year when he was spotted at a Redskins game after having called in sick that day! He later when on to do mornings at Q107.

This aircheck was recorded on the last Fourth of July weekend before the tumultuous change in format to Adult Contemporary at the end of Summer. The weekend featured double plays of Summertime songs from years past.

Being a holiday, WPGC 'Coke Is It' 4th of July Summer T-shirts were being given away. The day before on the 4th, over 10,000 of them had been distributed on the Mall at the Beach Boys concert, much to the chagrin of Q107.

Other contesting included tickets to the Washington area premier of Kenny Rogers' first theatrical film, 'Six Pack'. Throughout this tape are teases inviting listeners to 'Go For The Cash, Soon', yet another in the long string of cash related contests the station was famous for.

The WPGC softball team, the 'Ballers' were in action taking on the Superbowl Pub 'Muggers' in an upcoming charity game for Childrens' Hospital. See one of the team jerseys.

Seemed like you couldn't drive anywhere in 1982 without seeing a WPGC bumpersticker somewhere. Countless thousands had been distributed through the over 350 7-Eleven stores in Metro Washington over the years. The WPGC Free Money Van patrolled the streets in search of stickers that would yield $100 cash to listeners who had strategically placed one on their bumper.

The station's positioning statements in use at the time included the topical, 'Your Station For Summer' as well as 'Washington's Radio Station' (what else would it be, a toaster?!). Jingles were from a TM package called 'Radio Express' from July of 1981 while the WPGC 'Whisper Drop' came from 'Whisper Chants', JAM package in June of 1980 which was used to quickly identify the station without interrupting the flow of the music.

Sadly, JJ passed away on 01/25/19 at age 64.

Special thanks to Matt Craig of Big Apple Airchecks.com for the above.
